Ways we value heritage

A staggering 4.4 million people give their time and expertise every year through volunteering with heritage organisations and at heritage sites, at museums and in libraries across England. If you’re interested in volunteering in historic Lincoln take a look on the Get Involved section.

In addition to the interest in volunteering, research has found that our rich heritage, especially historical buildings and the natural environment, is a major player in boosting the economy by attracting visitors and tourists from home and abroad. Four in every ten overseas visitors to the UK, who come for leisure rather than business reasons, say that heritage is the primary motivation for their trip – which is more than any other single factor!

The popularity of heritage is well understood, and around half the UK population make a trip to experience the atmosphere of a historic town or city at least once a year, with four people in ten visiting  a museum or gallery, and more than 38 million visitors to historic houses, cathedrals and castles.

As the conservation work on Lincoln Castle steadily progresses through 2014, and plans continue to develop for Lincoln Cathedral Connected, the city looks forward to welcoming more visitors.
