Royal opening of Lincoln Castle
HRH Princess Anne was given a very warm welcome to Lincoln on June 8th when she officially opened Lincoln Castle following the major Lincoln Castle Revealed conservation project. More than 2,000 people attended the royal opening with many of those receiving tickets through a ballot.
After Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque to mark the completion of the project, the Royal Party toured the castle – strolling along the East Curtain Wall, visiting the Victorian Prison, and meeting some of the people who had worked on the project.
A further highlight of the day followed, when the Royal Party visited the David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault, where the Very Reverend Philip Buckler blessed the Vault.
After the official celebrations, the castle grounds were vibrant with demonstrations of heritage skills and presentations.
The Poets Laureate delighted the crowds with the premiere of their new works specially commissioned to mark Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary. Carol Ann Duffy, Britain’s Poet Laureate, Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales and Imtiaz Dharker who has just received the Queens Medal for Poetry read their poems accompanied by musician John Sampson. The new works were commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council, with generous support from Arts Council England.
