Magna Carta celebrations will support £22.2 billion spend expected from overseas tourists
VisitBritain has forecast that overseas visitors to the UK are expected to spend £22.2 billion in 2015, which is an increase of almost £1 billion on 2014.
Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said:
“Britain has so much to offer tourists with our stunning countryside, great heritage and world class sport and culture. Working closely with the tourism industry we will continue to champion the UK abroad as part of our long term economic plan.”
VisitBritain says that the tourism boost has been helped by promotional campaigns to potential overseas visitors, especially those planning visits from the Far East, alongside a number of anniversaries taking place this year, including the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta, and the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.
The exciting unveiling of the David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault at the restored Lincoln Castle Revealed at the beginning of April , and the celebrations in Lincoln throughout the year, will encourage visitors and support the economy in Lincoln and the wider county, as well as playing a role for the UK’s economy.
Other statistics from VistiBritain reveal that the entire tourism sector in the UK – both domestic and international – contributed £14.5 million every hour to the nation’s economy in 2014.
