Lincoln Castle – a place of towers and spiral staircases

The development and restoration work at Lincoln Castle continues at a pace, with less than 5 months to go now until the restored castle is revealed in April next year. Recently the Corten steel lift tower became a significant new addition to ensure there is access onto the castle walls.

This was followed by the arrival of a steel spiral staircase this week ready for installation in the grounds. The specially constructed staircase befits the location – it is 14 metres high and weighs nine tonnes.  The skilful manoeuvring and hoisting over the castle walls involved an 80 tonne crane to locate it safely into position.

Tourism Development Manager at Lincolnshire County Council, Mary Powell said, “The staircase and lift tower will provide new access onto the castle wall walks. They will be set back from the wall and joined by a footbridge. They are purposely built lower than the wall itself so they cannot be seen from the other side.  Corten steel is fantastic, and after a while it turns a rusty red. It’s often used in heritage sites and will blend in and sit well with the red bricks on site.”
