Preliminary work before the lifting of the Saxon sarcophagus

Archaeologists from FAS Heritage are working closely with main contractors Robert Woodhead Ltd on the challenging and delicate job of removing the Saxon sarcophagus found at Lincoln Castle as a result of the current restoration work.

The sarcophagus is currently 3 metres below ground level and it is likely to take some three weeks to extract. An undisturbed, monolithic late Saxon sarcophagus within such a carefully stratified archaeological sequence is unprecedented in England and is of national significance.
