Castle Walls

Immediately after the conquest, William built a number of castles as part of an effort to subdue the population. It is more than probable that the current arrangement of the Castle, its walls and gates, is a creation of the early 12th Century and by 1115 there is certainly reference to Lincoln Castle having stone walls.

The principal aim of the masonry fabric repair is to repair and conserve all masonry fabric using traditional stone masonry and mortar pointing techniques. It will be of critical importance to be able to weather proof paved top surfaces of all the wall walks and properly re-point all parapets so that rainfall cannot penetrate into the core of the wall, because it is this that has been the cause of the terrible damage to the Castle walls.

A complete Wall Walk circuit will be created and through the installation of a lift and spiral staircase in twin towers which are contemporary in design, we will be able to offer excellent access to all visitors. DDA access is not possible for the full circuit, but it can be created for the best part, described by our architect Andrew Arrol, as “the great reveal moment” – the full stunning view of the West front of the Cathedral. Many stories can be told from the wall walks, such as the Battle of Lincoln Fair, as they give views over the city, the key buildings and the county beyond.
